The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a call to action to end poverty and hunger, protect the planet, and ensure healthy lives, peace and prosperity by the year 2030. At McMaster, we recognize our responsibility to address these goals as we work together – across disciplines and faculties, locally and globally – to create a healthier, brighter world. Much of the research taking place at McMaster is directly tied to the 17 SDGs and their targets. The Lager Lecture Series will feature talks by some of these researchers, projects and groups, to showcase how McMaster is helping to reach these goals. Read more about McMaster`s commitment to SDGs. On October 27th, 2021 Dr.Claudia Emerson, IEPI Director, will be presenting on the role of ethical, social & cultural thinking in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals. Achieving the ambitious plan for peace, prosperity, and environmental sustainability set by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will require commitment by all sectors of society to embrace a transformation in how we think and live. It also requires collective action driven by strong coalitions and partnerships. While it may be simple to unite around shared goals to address inequalities, injustice, conflict and instability, addressing these global challenges in ways that are ethically, socially, and culturally appropriate is a deeply complex endeavour. Dr. Claudia Emerson will reflect on the role of “Ethical, Social, and Cultural (ESC) Thinking” in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, with particular reference to SDG#16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. |
